Greendale Credit Union is a fictional credit union created to demonstrate Smarkly. It is not a financial institution, offers no accounts, loans or services, and accepts no personal information.

What "member-owned" actually changes

8 January 2026

Every credit union says it. Most people hear it as a nice-sounding structural detail with no practical consequence, somewhere between a slogan and a legal footnote. It has consequences, and they are specific.

Where the surplus goes

A bank that has a good year distributes profit to shareholders. We do not have shareholders. A good year here has three possible destinations: better rates on savings, better terms on loans, or fewer fees. That is not generosity, it is the only available plumbing.

This is also why credit unions tend to look unremarkable in a boom and noticeably better when money is tight. There is no investor expecting growth, so nothing forces a product that works against the people buying it.

One member, one vote

Somebody with two hundred dollars here has the same vote as somebody with two hundred thousand. That is genuinely unusual, and it shapes who ends up on the board — people who use the institution rather than people who invest in it.

The honest downsides

We are smaller. That means fewer branches when you travel, a slower pace on new features, and no capacity to compete on some products at all. If you want a bank on every corner of every city, that is a real thing a large bank offers and we do not.

It also means we are slower to change our minds. A co-operative governed by its members is, by design, not nimble. Most of the time that protects you. Occasionally it means our app was three years behind, which it was.

How to tell if it is working

Not from the marketing. Look at the fee schedule, which is published and dull and tells you almost everything. Ask what happens if you are twelve dollars short on a Saturday. Ask whether anyone is paid a commission for putting you into one product rather than another.

Those three answers separate institutions faster than any brand promise, and you can ask them of us too.
